My friend/family member
is an agent. Should I use them?
This is a commonly asked question. Honestly, no one can tell you what
is right in this type of situation, or how well it will turn out.
Typically all falls into what your comfortable with and what
your willing to sacrifice. Working with a friend or family member
has as much disadvantages as it does advantages. Its important to
look at the situation objectively.
There are some people who make the decision to never do business
(or anything involving money) with friends or family. Buying and/or
selling a property is a big decision, be careful not to use a friend or family member out of
a feeling of obligation. After all you are investing a large some of money into a
property that you will be stuck with for some time.
We have listed a few things to
consider before using a friend or family member as your agent.
Note: These are just "food for
thought", many transactions with friends and family work out just
fine. Being informed is the key to a successful home buying/selling
process.
Question: Would I feel comfortable
telling them I don't like something, or that I want to
discuss something further?
Question: Am I trusting them with
to much of the decision making, should I be going with
my gut feelings more?
-
Personal
feelings can sometimes get in the way of proper judgment.
-
If anything
goes wrong with the property, you might feel that your
friend/family is to blame for not paying closer attention.
Question: Am I looking at the big picture.
Or am I only using them because I am worried to
say no?
-
If anything was
to become a legal issue, you might have to sue your friend or
family member.
-
Money will be
paid to them at the end of the transaction, will either party feel
it has not been properly negotiated?
Remember : If these items do
not apply to your particular situation then you should have no
problem working with this friend or family member. Many transactions
go beautifully, this information is only here to help you make an
informed decision.
